01Who We Are

The Wood Has Already Been Grown. Why Grow More?

Every year, millions of board feet of perfectly usable lumber ends up in landfills — oak beams from century-old barns, heart pine from dismantled warehouses, Douglas fir from decommissioned bridges. This wood has already absorbed CO₂, already weathered decades of use, and already proven its structural integrity.

Norfolk Lumber intercepts that wood before it reaches the landfill. We grade it, process it, and connect it with builders, architects, designers, and homeowners who value character, sustainability, and strength.

Our Process

How It Works: From Salvage to Delivery

Every piece of reclaimed lumber in our yard has been through a rigorous five-step journey designed to ensure quality, traceability, and sustainability.

01

Source & Scout

Our salvage team identifies demolition projects, barn teardowns, industrial decommissions, and surplus stock across the Mid-Atlantic. We evaluate structural condition, species, and volume before committing to a salvage operation. We partner with over 40 demolition contractors who call us before any teardown begins.

02

Extract & Recover

Using careful deconstruction techniques, we hand-pull nails, remove fasteners, and extract lumber with minimal damage. Unlike mechanical demolition that splinters and crushes wood, our selective approach preserves the full length and integrity of every board, beam, and timber we recover.

03

Grade & Sort

Back at our Virginia Beach yard, every piece is inspected and graded. We identify species, check for rot, insect damage, and chemical treatment. Sound lumber is sorted by species, dimension, and grade. We follow NHLA grading standards and can provide MSR testing for structural applications.

04

Process & Mill

Depending on your needs, we plane, resaw, sand, kiln-dry, or tongue-and-groove the lumber. Our milling facility can process up to 5,000 board feet per day, transforming rough salvaged timber into dimensioned, project-ready stock that meets modern building standards.

05

Deliver & Install

We load your order onto our flatbed fleet and deliver anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic region. For large commercial projects, we coordinate phased deliveries to match your construction schedule. We also offer installation guidance and can connect you with experienced reclaimed wood installers.

Wood Species

Featured Species in Our Inventory

Each reclaimed species has unique structural properties, grain patterns, and best-use applications. Here are four of our most requested.

Antique Heart Pine

Southern Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris)

Janka Hardness

1,225 lbf

Density

38-42 lbs/ft³

Heart pine is the undisputed crown jewel of reclaimed lumber. Harvested from old-growth longleaf pines that once blanketed 90 million acres of the American Southeast, this wood features an amber-to-deep-red heartwood with extraordinarily tight grain — often 20-30 growth rings per inch compared to 4-8 in modern plantation pine. The species was logged nearly to extinction by 1900 and is no longer commercially available as new lumber. Reclaimed heart pine comes from tobacco warehouses, textile mills, and factory floors built between 1850 and 1930. Its natural resin content makes it remarkably resistant to insects and decay.

Best for: Flooring, stair treads, mantels, countertops, accent walls

White Oak

Quercus alba

Janka Hardness

1,360 lbf

Density

47 lbs/ft³

Reclaimed white oak is prized for its closed-cell grain structure, which makes it naturally waterproof — the same property that made it the preferred species for whiskey barrels and ship building for centuries. Our reclaimed white oak comes primarily from dismantled barn frames, bridge timbers, and industrial warehouse structures across Virginia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. The wood develops a warm honey-to-silver patina with age and takes finishes beautifully. Old-growth white oak has a Janka hardness significantly above modern plantation-grown stock due to its slow growth rate and tight annual rings.

Best for: Flooring, furniture, bar tops, exterior cladding, boat building

Douglas Fir

Pseudotsuga menziesii

Janka Hardness

710 lbf

Density

34 lbs/ft³

Reclaimed Douglas fir is the workhorse of the salvaged timber world. This species was the backbone of 20th-century industrial construction — factories, warehouses, railroad trestles, and heavy timber structures throughout the Pacific Northwest and Mid-Atlantic. Reclaimed Doug fir beams often measure 8x8 inches or larger, with clear, straight grain and a warm reddish-brown color that deepens with age. The wood has an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for exposed structural beams where both appearance and performance matter. Its vertical grain pattern creates a refined, linear aesthetic.

Best for: Exposed beams, timber framing, ceiling joists, shelving, paneling

American Chestnut

Castanea dentata

Janka Hardness

540 lbf

Density

30 lbs/ft³

American chestnut is the rarest species in our inventory and among the most historically significant. Before the chestnut blight of the early 1900s wiped out nearly 4 billion trees, the American chestnut comprised 25% of all hardwood trees in eastern forests. Today, the only way to obtain this wood is through reclamation — from old barns, fence rails, cabin logs, and wormy chestnut paneling. The wood is lightweight, easy to work, and exceptionally rot-resistant. Its characteristic worm tracks (from post-blight insect activity) are considered a desirable design feature. Every board is genuinely irreplaceable.

Best for: Paneling, furniture, picture frames, ceiling beams, wine cellars

Why Choose Reclaimed

Superior Wood. Lighter Footprint.

Denser & Stronger

Old-growth timber grew slowly over decades, producing tighter grain patterns and higher structural density than modern plantation wood.

Fully Seasoned

Reclaimed lumber has air-dried for years — sometimes centuries — meaning it's more dimensionally stable and less prone to warping or splitting.

Carbon Negative

By reusing existing wood, you avoid the emissions from logging, milling, and transporting virgin timber. The carbon stays locked in the wood.

Unique Character

Nail holes, patina, saw marks, and weathering give reclaimed wood a visual depth and authenticity that cannot be manufactured.

Landfill Diversion

An estimated 26 million tons of construction debris reaches U.S. landfills each year. Reclaiming lumber keeps usable material in circulation.

Historical Provenance

Our wood comes from warehouses, barns, factories, and bridges — each piece has a story that adds meaning to your project.

05Our Commitment

The Norfolk Lumber Sustainability Pledge

Sustainability isn't a marketing label — it's the foundation of every decision we make. Here is our public commitment, with milestones and deadlines.

2024 (Completed)

100% Solar-Powered Yard Operations

All milling equipment, kiln operations, office lighting, and vehicle charging stations now run on a 72kW rooftop solar array installed across our warehouse and mill buildings. Excess energy is fed back into the Virginia Beach municipal grid.

2025 (Completed)

Zero Single-Use Packaging

We eliminated all single-use plastic wrap, foam padding, and disposable strapping from our shipping operations. Lumber is now secured with reusable ratchet straps, and protective wrapping uses recycled kraft paper and biodegradable shrink film.

2026 (In Progress)

Electric Delivery Fleet Transition

We are converting our flatbed delivery fleet to electric or hybrid-electric vehicles. Two of our five trucks are now electric, with the remaining three scheduled for replacement by Q4 2026. This will eliminate approximately 38 tons of annual tailpipe CO₂ emissions.

2027 (Target)

5 Million Board Feet Annual Reclamation

We aim to nearly double our annual reclamation volume from 2.8M to 5M board feet by expanding our salvage network to include Maryland, Delaware, and the DC metro area. This will save an estimated 7,500 trees and prevent 5,500 tons of CO₂ annually.

2028 (Target)

Carbon-Negative Certified Operations

Through a combination of solar energy, electric vehicles, carbon sequestered in our reclaimed inventory, and verified offset partnerships, we aim to achieve third-party certification as a carbon-negative business — meaning our operations remove more CO₂ than they produce.
